You won’t have to go far to find Todburn Antiques’ new place. It moved subsequent door. Along with American Pie, Treasures and Antiques and Chatchkes, the store is just one of the handful of that stay on a Fruitville Road strip that now homes a vape shop, a barber shop and other assistance companies.

Soon after six several years, owner Donald Jobe downsized from a 5,000-sq.-foot space to about fifty percent of that, but retained all the wacky, wicked and eclectic taste that turns the shop into a patchwork time warp to the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

Jobe suggests he wanted something more intimate, and it was hard to hold up with all the inventory that packed the previous space. He began relocating in October, and the new location was up and working in time for the holiday seasons.

Amid the pandemic, Jobe states, citizens have rediscovered where they live, and an outpouring of assist from locals and stay-cationers from nearby metropolitan areas like Tampa became new consumers.

Jobe has been gathering and selling antiques for 60 years, 33 of them in West Position, Connecticut, some of them in Manhattan.

What is the oldest thing you’ll find in his retail outlet? “Me,” he states. The 77-year-old has been fascinated by unique treasures given that his childhood, and still holds dear a little Japanese vase with broken handles he bought when he was 8.

The store homes every little thing from antique thimbles to saucy Alberto Vargas illustrations. As for a concentrated specialty, “There’s too a great deal inventory to record,” he says. Best-selling items include pottery, glass artwork, and antique cameras, clocks and radios.

A bar location stocks mid-century glassware, decanters and flasks. And a dresses nook sparkles with ample sequined attire to outfit a theatre troupe, along with plumed hats, some intended by Jobe. In the restroom, Marilyn Monroe smiles from every corner, with major to base unusual photographs and iconic normally takes of the star. A collection of vintage Coca-Cola signs covers a wall, and in the back, antique wood toys bring grandpa’s “just before there have been video clip video games” tales to lifestyle.

From the peculiar and distinctive to the entertaining and playful, Jobe has it all, even in a more compact area.

Todburn Antiques is now located at 1526 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, and is open 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
