Prevention

Getting 10,000 steps a day may not put you on the fast track to better health if you’re not also eating healthy, getting enough high-quality sleep, and managing stressors, but it will definitely help you stay fit. For people who don’t want to worry about keeping track of yet another electronic device, these walking apps use the tools that are already built into your smartphone to monitor steps and motivate you to reach your walking goals. If you do wear a fitness tracker, most of the apps on this list will seamlessly sync your data so you can make the most of your step tracking. Read on to find out which one will best suit your walking needs.

Strava

Casual walkers will enjoy the free version of Strava while those who really want to amp up their training or wear a fitness tracker should consider a subscription ($7.99/month or $60/year). The free version allows you to track your workouts and share them with others. A subscription gives you lots of extras including route planning, goal setting, a training log, advanced metrics, and a beacon to let friends or family know where you are along your route.

Apple Health

Even without an Apple Watch, the Apple Health app can give you loads of walking data. It uses the sensors in an iPhone to calculate steps taken and distance walked. Plus, the Mobility section of the app will show your walking speed, walking asymmetry, step length, and double support time (how long both feet are on the ground).

Google Fit

The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise (like brisk walking) five days a week so to help you keep track of your heart-healthy progress, Google Fit monitors your walking activity and rewards you with “Heart Points.” The app, which can be download to iPhones or Android phones, will tell you how far you’ve walked, how many steps you’ve taken, how many calories you’ve burned, as well as how many minutes you’ve been active.

Fitbit Mobile Track

If you’re thinking about getting a fitness tracker, ease into it with Fitbit Mobile Track. This feature of the Fitbit app uses your phone’s sensors and GPS to track your steps and distance walked. It also calculates how many calories you’ve burned according to your height, weight, age, and sex. When you’re ready to take things to the next level, check out the Fitbit Versa 3.

Charity Miles

If better fitness isn’t enough of a motivator to get you on your feet, maybe raising money for a good cause will do the trick. With Charity Miles, every mile you walk, run, or bike is tracked by the app and puts money in the bank for a charity of your choosing. There are 40 different nonprofits to choose from so you’re bound to find one you want to support.

Foothpath

With many GPS apps, it’s difficult to customize your route—but not with Footpath! Just use your finger to trace the path you want to walk and the app will “snap” it to the map and tell you the exact distance of what you planned out. Then, as you walk, the app will use your phone’s GPS to show where you are along the route. Footpath Elite subscribers ($3.99/month or $23.49/year, only on iOS) get turn-by-turn directions, but any user can save favorite routes in their personal library for future walks.

World Walking

When you can’t take a real vacation, discover a new part of the world while you walk. Pick one of over 300 routes from around the globe and World Walking will give you a brief summary of the area and highlights of the walk ahead. Then, as you stroll around your neighborhood and gain distance, you’ll receive photos of milestones you hit along your global path. Plus, wherever Google Street View is available, you’ll be able to view what it looks like at that point where you are in the walk.

Walkmeter

Walkmeter is a must-have for solo walkers, especially those who work out early in the morning or late at night. That’s because it offers private tracking: While you’re out walking, you can share your location with friends, who can see your current pace and send you messages that are read aloud. It also uses your phone’s sensors and GPS to track activities like cycling, running, hiking, skiing, kayaking, and more. To top it all off, the app produces tons of graphs for the data lovers out there.

Pacer

If you’re looking for group support and motivation, Pacer, has lots of walking groups to join and challenges to participate in. It uses sensors in your phone as well as your phone’s GPS to track walking, running, hiking, and cycling. Other workouts (like canoeing and yoga) can be added manually, but the app won’t provide metrics (like calories burned) for them. The app even includes some free video workouts and you can always upgrade to Pacer Premium ($9.99/month or $49.99/year) if you want 12-week guided workout programs as well as extra data insights.

AllTrails

If you want to bring your walking workout to great heights, you need AllTrails. The app has more than 100,000 trails, which you can narrow down according to your location, difficulty level, the distance you want to hike, and fun features like waterfalls or birding opportunities. Then when you hit the trail, you can follow along on your phone to ensure you don’t make a wrong turn. For even more security, upgrade to AllTrails Pro ($29.99/year or $59.99/3 years) and download maps so you can stay on track even when you lose cell phone service, get notifications when you wander off the trail, and keep family and friends notified of your current location.

Map My Walk

Perhaps the most well-known walking app out there, Map My Walk allows you to track your own walking workouts and view popular routes other people walk near you. When you find a route you love, you can save it for later. You’ll get stats like your distance and pace, and if you have a fitness tracker to sync it to, it will incorporate that data as well.
