Smuggled Orangutans Start New Lifestyle Soon after Repatriation to Indonesia | Earth Information

JAMBI (Reuters) – A pair of critically endangered orangutans, rescued from smugglers on the Thai-Malaysian border in 2017, have arrived in Indonesia to bear rehabilitation so they can lastly be produced again into their native forest habitat.

Considered to be among the ages of 4 to 6 the orangutans, Ung Aing and Natalee, expended three a long time at Khao Pratab Chang Wildlife Breeding Centre in central Ratchaburi province, Thailand.

On Friday they arrived in western Indonesia’s Jambi province for health-related checks, which will include COVID-19 swabs, just before a rehabilitation system to put together them for their jungle house.

Online video footage showed the woman orangutans eagerly climbed out of their carriers and into a short term holding facility.

It is unclear how extensive the pair will stay in the orangutan sanctuary in advance of staying introduced into the wild.

Orangutans are poached illegally for foods, breeding to provide the domestic and intercontinental pet trade, and for conventional medicine.

Logging and deforestation, including forest clearance to make way for funds crops such as palm oil, has minimized the habitat of the critically endangered species.

There are an approximated 100,000 Bornean orangutans left in the wild, and only about 7,500 Sumatran orangutans, according to knowledge from the Entire world Wildlife Fund.

A full of 71 orangutans have been despatched back from Thailand to Indonesia considering that 2006, in accordance to a joint assertion produced by the two nations around the world.
