Scores Of Taliban Fighters Killed As Battling Rocks Insurgent Bastion

Dozens of Taliban fighters have been killed in fierce overnight battling between Afghan forces and militants who attacked numerous checkpoints in the insurgent bastion of Kandahar, officers said Sunday.

Taliban militants attacked checkpoints in 5 districts bordering the metropolis of Kandahar, which Afghan forces countered with significant air and floor assaults, the ministry of defence said in a assertion.

“The protection forces repulsed the assault, killing 51 terrorists and wounding nine,” the ministry stated, without presenting specifics of any casualties between authorities forces.

Since a US-Taliban deal in February, the insurgents have not carried out key assaults on critical metropolitan areas but have launched in the vicinity of-daily assaults against Afghan forces in rural locations.

The surge in violence in current months will come as the Taliban and Afghan authorities interact in peace talks.

The negotiations begun on September 12 in the Qatari funds of Doha, but on Saturday the two sides introduced a pause until finally January 5.
