Meet Mirfield’s ‘Mr Lidl’ – the man obsessed with buying the German supermarket’s wacky clothes

A man known locally as Mr Lidl from Mirfield is trying to get the supermarket’s attention after building up a collection of the shop’s branded merchandise.

Josh Smith has been attracting a lot of attention online with his Lidl collection which includes a fake personalist number plate marked ‘Mr Lidl’, a face mask, socks, Christmas jumper, sliders and trainers.

The 24-year-old engineer first bought a pair of €20 trainers during a work visit to Germany in April this year as a ‘joke’ but his collection has expanded ever since.

Josh who says he is not obsessed with Lidl said: “I was working away in Germany, I went to Lidl and they were selling the clothes and trainers. I bought a lot of stuff and brought it over.

“It started as a bit of fun, I bought the trainers for fun because it looked quite cool.

“I’ve got sliders, T-shirts, jumpers trainers, number plate, face mask. I bought her (his girlfriend) some matching Lidl sliders and a matching face mask but she won’t wear her mask.

“I even went into Lidl and got some right funny looks, the staff were laughing but my girlfriend was embarrassed.

“Now when I see people around Mirfield, they call me Mr Lidl.”

Josh believes he has spent £250 on Lidl merchandise, some of which he has given away to friends and family.

However, after seeing Grimsby man Sam Ward, also known as Lidl Lad, get a certificate for his supermarket branded clothing collection, Josh decided he would also try and get a certificate from the supermarket for his collection too as he claims to have more stuff.

He added: “In Germany, people were raving about the trainers, they sold out and people were reselling them for £100 or more.

“Mr Lidl started three months ago and it’s grown ever since.

“I’ve got to try and keep the reputation up and follow it through.”
