BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union on Thursday imposed a new round of sanctions on Belarus, targeting dozens extra officials above their position in the security crackdown released right after the contested presidential elections in August.

EU headquarters said the shift comes “in reaction to the brutality of the Belarusian authorities and in guidance of the democratic legal rights of the Belarusian folks.” It targets persons accused of duty for intimidation and violence in opposition to demonstrators, opposition users and journalists.
